Life in Jesus' Name

John 20:19-31
This week, we will be reading the story of Jesus' appearance to the disciples (minus Thomas), then again when Thomas is present. There is lots to be said about doubt and faith, but I suspect most of it has been said. What catches my attention this year, is the very last line of the passage "... and that through believing you may have life in his [Jesus'] name."

What does life in Jesus' name look like?

  1. Life in Jesus name looks a lot like Spring to me. Full of life and possibility and rain and growth and rain and blooming and rain and planting and rain. Did I mention rain? Not just any rain however. Spring rain. The rain that comes hard and heavy and floods the ground and leaves huge puddles on the road and amazing rainbows like a few weeks ago. Rain that makes everything grow. That's what life in Jesus name looks like to me. It looks like possibility to grow and be new again and again. Sure sometimes it looks muddy and drenched, but that's necessary. There is no other way to beautiful flowers except they be planted in the dirt and then watered.
On the less exessential side, life in Jesus name looks a lot like living with my parents did. I knew where home was, I knew who to go to when I was in trouble, and I knew who loved me even when I was unlovable. I didn't bear the weight of all the decisions and I was fed every time I was hungry. Yes, life in Jesus name looks a lot like home did.
